This accident, involving 2 vehicles occurred on Tuesday, March 19th 2024 at approximately 2:14 pm. The driver of black Volvo (2001) improper turn. Injuries were reported. An officer from Columbus Police Department was present at the scene and recorded the information contained in this report.
Unit 1 was traveling south on College Ave waiting to make a left turn to head east on Schaaf Dr. Unit 2 was traveling north on College Ave approaching the intersection of Schaaf Dr. The Driver of Unit 2 stated that he had a green light and was proceeding through the intersection going about 40 MPH when he observed Unit 1 beginning to make a left hand turn from the south bound turning lane on College Ave onto Schaaf Dr. The Driver of Unit 2 stated that he slammed on his breaks in an attempt to avoid hitting Unit 1 but was unable to come to a complete stop prior to the accident. The Driver of Unit 1 was struck while making the left turn onto Schaaf Dr and was pushed off of the road way onto the shoulder grassy area facing south. The Unit 2 was disable in the curb lane. Officers arrived on scene and pushed Unit 2 out of the curb lane of travel to avoid Unit 2 from getting struck by oncoming traffic. The Driver of Unit 1 was transported to Grant hospital in critical condition and was later downgraded to Life threatening condition. The Driver of Unit 1 was intubated and Officers were unable to gather a statement from the Driver of Unit 1 due to his condition. The Driver of Unit 1 is being treated by Dr. Beery for serious injuries to the neck and head. Unit 1 and Unit 2 were impound to the City's impound Lot located at 2700 Impound Lot Rd.
