Unit 2 was traveling northbound on US 23 (Columbus Pike) in the right lane. Unit 2 came to a stop at the intersection of US 42; due to having a red light. Unit 1 was traveling northbound on US 23 in the right lane; behind Unit 2. Unit 1 struck Unit 2 in the rear. Unit 1 driver stated he was traveling northbound and tried to change lanes to get around Unit 2. Unit 1 driver initially stated he was not distracted at the time of the crash; however; he later told investigators that he was using an electronic device and did not realize Unit 2 stopped at the intersection. Unit 1 driver attempted to swerve into the left lane to avoid a crash; but struck the rear of Unit 2. Unit 1 driver was transported to Riverside Hospital by Delaware City Medics and Unit 1 passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene by Medics. Unit 2 driver and passenger did not report any injuries. Unit 2 Trailer Information: RP: U707811 (Tennessee) VIN: 1GRAP0621DT574836 2013 White Great Dane Box Trailer Crash reconstructionists; a detective; and Motor Carrier Enforcement Inspectors were all called to the scene. Both vehicles were towed to the Delaware City Property Storage facility. Unit #2's trailer was towed to Heavy Duty Towing in Sunbury; Ohio.
