This accident, involving 3 vehicles occurred on Thursday, April 13th 2023 at approximately 9:33 pm. The driver of black Chevrolet (2004) following too close / acda. Injuries were reported. An officer from Columbus Police Department was present at the scene and recorded the information contained in this report.
Reporting officer was dispatched to the area of IR 670 W near Leonard Ave. Reporting officer located the scene on IR 670 W near MM 5.6. When he arrived on scene other officers and CFD were present. Unit #2 was across the #2 and #3 lanes and had damage to the right rear portion of the vehicle and the right left portion of the vehicle. Unit #1 was on the embankment off of the right shoulder of the freeway; facing the railroad tracks. Unit #1 had sustained heavy front end damage and the driver of unit #1 was trapped. Unit #3 was immediately to the left of unit #1; with the sides of both cars touching; facing the opposite way from unit #1. The driver of unit #1 was trapped. The Driver of unit #1 was extracted from the vehicle and transported to Grant Hospital by CFD Medic X23 in Life Threatening condition. The driver and passenger of unit #2 were transported to OSU East Hospital by CFD Medic 18 in stable condition. The Driver of unit #3 was freed by mechanical means; he was transported to Grant Hospital in Critical Condition. Per AIU it appeared that unit #2 was disabled from a previous crash (the left rear axle had been snapped and the vehicle was unable to move) and was blocking the #3 lane. Unit #3 was slowing in traffic to safely navigate the disabled unit #2. This is when unit #1 struck unit #3 from the rear. Then unit #1 struck unit #2. Continued on OH2.
