This accident, involving 1 vehicle occurred on Saturday, July 9th 2022 at approximately 12:38 pm. Injuries were reported. An officer from Columbus Police Department was present at the scene and recorded the information contained in this report.
The collision occurred on Smoky Row Road at Stowbridge Road. Per the witnesses; Unit #1 was northbound on Smoky Row Road and began to drift off the road to the right at approximately Stowbridge Road. Unit #1 then struck a drainage ditch and the sidewalk that crossed it and was launched into the air. Unit #1 then struck a tree; where it came to rest. Witness #1 was behind Unit #1 and said that it just drifted off the road. Witnesses #2-4 were in a vehicle together traveling southbound on Smoky Row Road; and witnessed the vehicle leave the roadway; launch airborne; and strike the tree. Witness #2 stated that when he got to Unit #1; the driver was unresponsive with his foot still on the gas pedal. He stated that he appeared to be in medical distress; with his hands curled; eyes rolled back; some foaming at the mouth; and some vomit. This witness stated that he turned the car off; undid the driver's seat belt; and then several people pulled him from the car to start CPR compressions. CFD Medic 27 arrived and took over life-saving measures. CFD Medic 27 transported in critical condition to Riverside Hospital; where the driver was pronounced deceased at 1:20pm by Dr. Shams. Per the medical staff; there were no signs of trauma from the crash; and the driver appears to have suffered a fatal medical event that resulted in the vehicle crash.
