This accident, involving 2 vehicles occurred on Thursday, January 20th 2022 at approximately 9:47 am. The driver of silver Ford (2006) other improper action. Injuries were reported. An officer from Mentor Police Department was present at the scene and recorded the information contained in this report.
Unit 1 was S/B on Hopkins Rd. Unit 1 went around two cars stopped at the railroad tracks (gates were down). Unit 2 was E/B on the tracks. The front of unit 2 struck the right side of unit 1. Unit 1 spun off the tracks coming to final rest south and east of the railroad crossing. On 01/20/2022; I responded to the South Railroad Tracks on Hopkins Rd for an accident. I then responded to 9517 Jackson St where the front of the train involved had come to a stop. I spoke with the Engineer; Michael Kulik Sr; and the conductor; Zachary Cole. Michael advised he was operating the train. Michael stated they were driving Eastbound on the tracks traveling at 58mph in a 60mph zone. Michael stated the gates were down and the lights were operating at Hopkins Rd. Michael advised there were cars stopped on both the North side and the South side of the tracks at the gates. Michael advised he observed a silver pick up truck driving Southbound on Hopkins Rd on the North side of the tracks. Michael stated he observed the silver pick up truck drive around another vehicle; which was stopped at the North gates; and drive onto the tracks. Michael stated he was blowing the horn. Michael stated the silver pick up truck sped up and did not stop at all. Michael advised that is when the Train struck the pick up truck in the bed of the truck.
