This accident occurred on Wednesday, May 26th 2021 at approximately 6:08 pm. Injuries were reported. An officer from Columbus Police Department was present at the scene and recorded the information contained in this report.
Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Saranac Dr and Walnut HIll Blvd on a report of a one vehicle crash. Upon arrival; officer observed unit #1 appeared to have been travelling westbound on Saranac Dr just east of Walnut HIll Blvd when unit #1 travelled off the roadway to the north; jumped the curb; struck a fire hydrant and then a mailbox before entering the westbound lane of Saranac Dr. Unit #1 appeared to travel southwest; crossing the center line and into on coming traffic; jumped the south curb and came to a rest. Passerby's stated they check on the driver and only occupant of the vehicle and stated he was unconscious and unresponsive. Medics arrived and began lifesaving medical efforts at scene. Truro Township Medic 162 transported driver of unit #1 to Mount Carmel East where he was pronounced at 18:44 by Dr. Herrinhaus. Officer contacted AIU and was advised since the death appeared to have been medical and occurred before the crash; they did not have to respond. The vehicle was impounded.
